Trump promises to pardon Pete Rose

Since the election I've been purposely avoiding reading the papers. I subscribe to NYTimes. Washington Post, Daily Beast and read Politico but limit news to sports. So I'm starting to come out of shell and read this headline "Trump promises to pardon Pete Rose"

Do you think Trump knows Pete is dead? Do you think Trump ever played baseball, or even if he would know which direction to run after hitting a baseball i.e. third base line or first base line?

OK, now I need to clean off my screen of Bourbon......

Two things: The headline I read referred to it as a "posthumous pardon," so it would be my guess that he knows. Secondly, I'm pretty sure I recall reading that he played a little ball, either in college or prep school, and much as it pains me to acknowledge the fact, wasn't half-bad.

Oh, actually a third thing: yawn. Of all the grievous sins committed by DJT and his drooling henchmen, a presidential pardon of a gambling addict and tax cheat comes in at about #932 on the list. Hell, just about any of the 01-06 pardons is more egregious.

Does this make gas or groceries cheaper?

Noogies 03-01-2025 05:44 PM

Besides, what Pete really needs is a pardon from the HOF and the BBWAA.

Him playing sports is probably about as true as his being on Time Magazine. And even if it is true.why admit it. You know he never admits lying or failure.

Say what?

I have no idea who Pete Rose is.

I'm more concerned with the current dismantling of American institutions that provide assistance and security for America.

To appreciate the full impact of these and other crippling devastations perpetrated by DJT and his flunkies from the point of view of the American constituent you really need to know who Pete Rose was.

Pete Rose was an amazing baseball player beloved especially by Cincinnati Reds fans. And, he seriously broke rules, including betting against the Reds in a game he was in. So he was banished from baseball. Trump wants to pardon him because doing so promotes his 'fuck the rules attitude.

Certain pardons and commuting of sentences add to his mix of being a very unconventional politician. I remembered he touched the hip hop crowd with Kodak Black and Lil Wayne.

Rose was a crooked baseball player. The lowest of the low, feck him.

Yep, a president who insults our enemies and sucks up to our enemies is indeed quite unconventional. You really are a tool, Donny.

I'm sure the Central Park Five appreciated that.

I am an interpreter. I try to be objective. Trump is indeed quite unconventional. That is undeniable

We are in a culture war with the haters. The haters are winning. Objectivizing or both-siding or sanewashing the haters helps them.

To me, you sound like someone favorably interpreting Putin’s geopolitical aims.

Recently if one follows the the line from the main news media one gets the impression that half of Trump's selection would not be confirmed.

It means that the media are making news; they are trying to lead the public in a certain direction.

To analyze in the time of Donald Trump one needs objectivity which clearly many lack. That is the reason Donald Trump has so often confounded the cosmopolitans.

Reporting on his constant lies, lawbreaking, and assaults on our democracy is a tough task. True objectivity would result in things looking much worse than they currently do in the press.

Trump outrages of all stripes have been normalized. By design, he has overwhelmed the system with his barrage of bullshit. And much of the press has played along, equivocating on his awfulness and the danger he poses to our country.

I can think of somebody lower ...

Regardless, please allow me to quote something I stole from Bill James for a similar thread elsewhere:

"He was not blessed with great strength or quickness or agility, but he was perhaps the most competitive player who ever lived. He hustled from April 1st right to the end of the season, like nobody else we ever saw; he was called Charlie Hustle. He loved the game of baseball, he loved playing baseball for a living and he made sure it showed every day."

I will add that Pete Rose was also a cheater, a degenerate gambler, a liar, a thief, a misogynist, a grifter and a convicted criminal. He could be all those things and still have the attributes James listed. Human beings are complex creatures.

Biased as a life long Reds fan with multiple Pete Rose autographs.

Pretty sure he never bet against his teams, it was always for the win. Not condoning it but lets get the facts start.

I've heard 'bet against' but certainly haven't dug into it and can't support it. So I'll withdraw that one.

I can nearly guarantee that he would have if it had suited his purposes, though.
