The MAGA Fueled Shutdown Follies

"Martin Luther nailed his theses to a church door. Matt Gaetz displayed his in the men’s room.

Specifically, the congressman (or somebody) left a draft of his “Motion to Vacate” on a baby changing table in a restroom downstairs from the House chamber, where it was found by journalist Matt Laslo. “H. Res. __,” it began. “Resolved, that the Office of Speaker of the House of Representatives is hereby declared to be vacant.”

But Gaetz (R-Fla.) doesn’t need a resolution to “vacate the chair,” as a motion to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker is called. For all practical purposes, the chair is already vacant.

It should have been obvious to all this week, if it wasn’t already, that McCarthy (R-Calif.) is speaker in name only, as his leaderless Republican caucus stumbles toward a government shutdown. Review some of the labels House Republicans hurled at each other over the last few days:
“Clown show.” “Clowns.” “Foolishness.” “Weak.” “Terribly misguided.” “Selective amnesia.” “Stupidity.” “Failure to lead.” “Lunatics.” “Disgraceful.” “New low.” “Enabling Chairman Xi.” “People that have serious issues.” “Pathetic.”"

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...-gop-deadlock/

Looks like the wheels fell off the Klown Kar in the MAGA controlled House of Representatives and chief klown Matty Gaetz is firmly in the saddle perched on Kevin McCarthy's head. Boo Boo Boebert is in the House cloakroom handing out whatever it is she's handing out and Gym Jordan is squeakily thundering about Hunter Biden.

What a klown show these derelicts are giving the American public. smh

I have been both interested and fascinated by the recent drama being played out in the GOP controlled House. Truly an example of inmates running the asylum. Wonder if McCarthy will exit the speakership like Boehner and Ryan.

The Extortion Brigade aka Freedumb Caucus want cuts that will not pass muster in the House, let alone the Senate and President Biden. McCarthy can reach out to the Dems and pass at least a CR for now, but then he will be kicked out as Speaker the very next day. The Dems can help him stay as Speaker too, but he needs to shit can the Predisent Biden Impeachment charade. Proverbially speaking, that is taking life into his own hands. And moving forward, they may not be able to elect a new Speaker and the House will be suspended till whenever.

How did we ever get here and there are no easy answers. Its all very funny if it was not so scary as what can happen to our economy, which is barely recovering post Covid.

Oerets 09-22-2023 04:35 PM

When one considers the GOP plan since SS was enacted all those years ago.

To bankrupt the country and then force in draconian measures. It seems to make sense with the current state of business.

My fantasy is that the Republicans screw this up so bad that it brings in 6-10 years of Democratic leadership across the board. Not the uber lefties mind you, but a yank back to normalcy that rests on the left shoulder of the Bell Curve.

Which would lead to 6-10 years of GQP bitching and moaning which by then hopefully no one will be listening.

With the immigration being handled rather poorly for awhile now. Looking as if just hoping it would go away.

This should make for good ammo to use against the Democrats. It is going to be hard to claim doing a good job. So the Republicans have a good chance at gains next year.

Still believe by the time they get to our border we have lost the fight. With migrants reaching our borders from countries with no common one. This is the issue that seems to be overlooked.

RickeyM 09-23-2023 04:06 PM

Immigration has been handled rather poorly for awhile now by both parties.

I know this is true.

Biden could try harder IMO!

Impose tariffs on Mexico for providing safe passage to illegal immigrants through their country and use that money to beef up border security. If not, this will only get worse and worse. No tax revenue while cost of services increase. Work permits will help in this regard.

Right!

Do something to stop them before they get to Mexico.

Accepting then in and allowing to go on the honor system not gonna work...

There are endless ideas for making our immigration system work better. Anyone here is sure to have some. They are worthless because no one is asking us to solve the problems. The real problem we have is how can we get a more functional legislative branch?

Abolish gerrymandering, but not sure if this can be accomplished. If not we will have to make do with what we have.

Repeal Citizens United.........now I am dreaming. In a couple of elections, the Senate will become The Billionaires Club.

The cult has a plan for a more functional government. One with no descent or discussion. Will it be fair and have the majority wishes as a concern? Rather think not. Functional it will be thou.

donquixote99 09-24-2023 09:08 AM

Functional in terms of right values. A highly effective way to destroy the planet as fast as possible, for example, is not what I'd call functional.

Functional in once in control this cult will use whatever means necessary to obtain the world they envision. Unchecked with nothing to stop them will overreach with little thoughts of anyone else.

Other then a burden.

The vision is so dysfunctional they will destroy themselves with strategic errors, like the Nazis. But they could take down the world with them. Much much better to derail the whole thing before it gains such power.

Have hope that stopping this cult will happen. Yet remember we are still fighting our last Civil War in this country. This cult will be around for many years to come and will be persistence. Look now further then Abortion and the years of fighting to get their way.

The members of the GOP House caucus who actually deserve our scorn are not the 45 members of the "Freedom Caucus", but the other 122 Republicans who are going along with it due to their sniveling primary loss avoidance disorder.

For the Republican party that went out the window quite some time ago.

This is not an immigration problem, it's a humanity problem. Mankind is not the human race, mankind is the missing like between apes and humans.

People who live in places where those in control don't give a shit if the people are starving, and will just murder them if they complain, are not going to stop trying to get into North America and Western Europe. Mankind's inhumanity to it's own will always be generating more misery, suffering, and attempts to escape it than any tough immigration laws anywhere can discourage.

And it's not so much better here in the good old USA. We typically don't face death by government, unless we have an inconvenient level of melanin in our epidermis. But we live in a country where the mega wealthy, in cahoots with all three branches of the government have, beginning in the early 1970's, queered the game to favor big business, big banks, big insurance, and big healthcare, to the extent that GenX, Millenials, GenY, and Gen Z are destined to not do as well as their parents and grandparents before them. It's still better here than anywhere else (with the exception of western Europe), but certainly not bad enough for most Americans to actually decide to get out and go somewhere better.

And it's pretty difficult, if not impossible, to go somewhere better unless you have enough money to swing it...and if you have enough money to swing it, you're probably OK staying put in what is quickly becoming a shithole. The blonde and I could do it, and we have dual Irish citizenship, so we could go live anywhere in the EU. But every time we sit down and try to figure out what it would cost, it always comes up to more than 100 large. Not to mention that we're both pushing 80 and having the endurance to do it comes into question. And then there's the exit tax on any unrealized capital gains at 23.8% for those of us who would revoke our citizenship to get out from under US federal income taxes. Motherfuckers.

Sweden, Demark, or Ireland (where she has tons of family) would be our choises.

Rajoo 09-27-2023 06:12 PM

Yes, this is a MAGA fueled shut down ordered by the Moron who is hoping to create chaos while sabotaging Biden's presidency during a fragile economic recovery. Should not be lost on us that the Saudi's reduced oil output further to help with the Moron's cause.

Ukraine and southern border are simply convenient excuses to increase the MAGAts ire.

Don't think I'll be going anywhere on our meager savings and Social Security checks, Alan. Maybe I could find a patron in the tropics who enjoys top shelf cannabis. Evidently I have a green thump or two...

Have you ever seen Terry Zwigoff's documentary "Crumb"? It's all about underground comix pioneer cartoonist Robert Crumb (and his wacky family). The focus is about Crumb and his family during the period of time just before they permanently left the country for France. It's a fabulous, and occasionally disturbing film...one of my favorites. Particularly memorable were the scenes with his brother Charles and his brother

The only way Crumb was able to afford it at the time, was by selling a half dozen of his library of sketchbooks, which he had saved throughout his career. It was a monumental trade off for him, but clearly worth it. So that's how Crumb financed it. This was back in 1991...eight years of Reagan and his insight into how the country was shifting to a corporate controlled state was what it took for him.

"Why would anybody walk around with advertising on their hat or their t-shirt?" - R. Crumb

Interesting to note that Gaetz is sending feelers to House Dems to help him oust McCarthy. This is getting to be a personal vendetta and the Dems are playing cool while not sure which way to turn.

McCarthy and Gaetz are so much alike, Gaetz will never be elected speaker and McCarthy will never be reelected speaker. McCarthy is also like a Flea Market owner, none of his wares are any good and it changes every day. A scumbag just like Gaetz, both empty suits.

Of course the Dems can help McCarthy avoid a shutdown and save his speakership if McCarthy plays ball, but chances are he will be unwilling to pay the price, stick to the deal he made with President Biden and end the impeachment charade.

Oerets 09-30-2023 01:14 PM

GOP...spinless...

Once again the very ones with the loudest voices and finger's pointing. Blaming everyone else for their very shortcomings. Proven signs of the very weak and scared!

House passes a CR bill to keep government functioning if Senate approves this deal. No funding for Ukraine. 91 Repugnants and one Dem voted against the bill, so look forward to McCarthy ouster beginning Monday.

Not an problem to the MAGA addled House members. They simply want to create chaos to blame Biden administration for their ineffectiveness while obscuring Trump's legal pitfalls. It got lot worse after the bail bondsman's switch to a guilty plea.

Read earlier today that Gaetz trying to sabotage McCarthy is in preparation for a run for governorship of Florida.

'McCarthy has really played them': Dems hail speaker for defying 'MAGA cult'
https://www.rawstory.com/amp/mccarth...nes-2665774237

Debasing oneself to Whell’s World is a fool’s game. Aligning with the rational world gets things done. Surprised McCarthy has finally learned.

Quote:

Dem lawmakers said after the vote that they were surprised McCarthy defied the fringe of his party.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat, said that he "really admires" McCarthy for putting clowns like Biggs and Gaetz "in an absolute box."

"They’ll never have the courage to try and remove him. McCarthy has really played them," Swalwell added.

Rep. Daniel Goldman, a fellow Dem, said he agrees with Swalwell.

"I agree. I didn’t think [McCarthy] had the backbone to stand up to the MAGA extremists, but he did today," Goldman said Saturday. "Finally, he chose to be Speaker of the whole House, not just Speaker of the MAGA cult."

Well...90 of the 221 Republicans in the US House voted against the bill...which means 131 of the GOP caucus crossed Trump and the Freedom Caucus assholes and supported the bill. Was it just that they were the lesser vote whores who wouldn't allow all the really problematic things that would happen as a result of a default? Or is it possible that the anti-democracy Republican radicals are not the force that they think they are?

Hope this is the fever breaking. Doubt it very much it is so. The 90 to a one will still be supporting Trump for President.

Trump ordered his minions to default on our debt.
They couldn’t.

He wanted them to impeach Biden.
They couldn’t even put it to a vote & the “inquiry” hearing was a bad joke.

He wanted them to shutdown the government.
They’re tearing each other apart on TV instead.

Trouble in MAGA paradise ... and Trump's fraud trial starts tomorrow.

After two impeachments of Trump, apparently the MAGA House changed the voting rules, but have not been able to find out the details. Perhaps not a simple majority anymore?

Trump coming up empty again and now the financial fraud trial starting, the MAGA sail has been punched full of holes.

Gaetz will certainly try to oust McCarthy tomorrow and that should be yet another clown show.
