Cataract Surgery?

Long time, no see (see what I did, there?)

Have any of you communist heathens had cataract surgery? I made need it - all the info I can gather indicates it is a low risk, quickity quick outpatient procedure with excellent results.

Hope you all are well and those in Houston holding on as best you can.

Hiya Cats. I've had family that have had it done with good results. Do it.

I was watching the news about that tropical storm off the Carolinas, 'Irma'? Stay dry, you old reprobate. (grin)

Pio1980 08-29-2017 01:45 PM

My S.O. had both done and is the better for it.

catswiththum 08-29-2017 01:47 PM

Irma was a dud, we remain in our normal monsoon mode until November - rains like hell at 4:00PM, sun back out at at 6:00PM. F%$king rain forest - all I need are some monkeys and a couple of Nat Geo crews in the back yard . . .

Thank you - reading is one thing, good reports from those who have been there much more reassuring.

No one I know who's had this one has done anything except see a ton better. You'll love it.

step father had this procedure on both eyes with little down time and he is very pleased with the results.

I went for my preop appointment today and will have my left eye done on Thursday.
My right eye will be done in two weeks.
From everything I hear it is low risk with very good results.

Hope you have a good recovery.

Thanks, everyone - very, very reassuring! Y'all are awesome.

Barbara, what prompted your initial visit? I haven't gone to the ophthalmologist yet - just noticed last week blurred vision in the center of my right eye, left one fine. From reading and our family history I am assuming cataract. Initially thought it was just something in my eye, but the blurring remains.

Guess I'll know for sure after my initial examination.

I have regular visits to the eye doc due to the effects of Graves' disease. The doc has been recommending this surgery for quite some time but I kept putting it off. A couple of week ends ago I had to drive at night and could not see to drive. My vision has gotten worse in the last year, blurry and hard to see in dim light.
Since I'm looking at retiring before the year is over, I wanted to do this while I still have good insurance.

Thanks - makes sense. Our insurance currently covers the ophthalmologist but not the procedure. Surgery is relatively inexpensive but I'm going to add vision coverage during open enrollment, as I'm sure the other one will need fixing sooner or later.

I've been told my insurance won't pay for it until it becomes a disability.

Poor vision isn't a disability?

Oerets 08-31-2017 08:01 AM

If I remember correctly, they are rated from 1 to 4, 4 being the worst. Most insurances will not pay until ones vision is affected greatly and rated at least a 3. That is how it was explained when I had one eye done 8 years ago.

I had trouble with mine. But now years later all is good. Held off on making a comment due to this fact. Basically went from 20/15 to 20/70 after the operation resulted in a astigmatism to the eye.

Barney

That's exactly what I was told. 3 out of 4, (Whatever that is.) or 20/70. Then, I can get it done with coverage.

CarlV 08-31-2017 10:24 AM

I guess that is what I had done, new lens put in anyway. Medi - Care covered but a good sized copay was due. Dr said I was legally blind in my left eye, I do know vision sure was blurry in that eye. My vision sure was really bizarre for 2-3 weeks until both eyes synch'd again. :p

That should be something that cannot be determined by an arbitrary number. For someone who must do very precise hand work, like a machinist, any loss in vision that cannot be corrected with glasses would be a disability. But how stupid am I to expect insurance companies to not be arbitrary?

That's something I've been wondering about. One eye gets done today and the other in two weeks. I guess I'll have to tough it out til both eyes are done.

By the way, good luck. I have had some interactions with eye surgeons lately, and the technology that they have available to them is amazing.

Hey JJ, you do pretty detailed work don't you? How much vision loss could you suffer and still be able to perform your job?

And, my apologies if this is a thread crap.

Oerets 08-31-2017 01:07 PM

Another wishing you a speedy recovery. Pay heed to the doctors instruction and take things easy.

I have no idea as a percentage of how much loss I could work with. I can tell you that I deal with screws with a major diameter of less than .030". Not quite as small as watchmakers but close.

Lighting is very important when you get down in this territory. I can only imagine what complications cataracts might bring to the problem.

You provide a good illustration of my point. I hope you don't feel used.:D

barbara 09-01-2017 06:01 AM

Thanks for all the well wishes.
Surgery wasn't near as scary as I anticipated..... thanks to what ever drugs they put in the IV.

I go back to doc today for a post op appointment. I expect he will say everything looks as good as it feels.

JJIII 09-01-2017 06:04 AM

Awesome - we upgraded our insurance, the surgery now covered as an outpatient procedure. Having it done in Jan. when the new policy kicks in.

Still nervous.

No reason to be nervous.... it is really easy!

Well, thanks - really helps to hear from someone who has had it done. I've been lucky and have been able to avoid doctors for ages.

I will suck it up and stop being a wheenie. :D

I put it off for over a year because I was so squeamish.... but really, it was a breeze.
Don’t know what kind of drug cocktail they gave me but it was amazing. If I was inclined to be a drug addict, I’d want to get my hands on more of that stuff.
