Deep Dive into Russia's Interference in US Election

U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered intelligence agencies to review cyber attacks and foreign intervention into the 2016 election and deliver a report before he leaves office on Jan. 20, the White House said on Friday.

In October, the U.S. government formally accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organizations ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election, and Obama has said he warned Russian President Vladimir Putin about consequences for the attacks.

This comes on top of evidence of Russian tampering in numerous European countries' elections. Of course, Trump still thinks it's a 400# kid in his parents' basement in New Jersey, whereas all 17 US intelligence agencies agree it's Russia. This should be interesting.

Oerets 12-09-2016 04:41 PM

Better come out with a report soon. Or it will go nowhere after 1/20/2017!

Even if it finds Russian tampering, nothing will be done with the new administration in power now.

First of all that "17 agencies" claim was made by Hillary regarding the hacked DNC emails, not the election.

And second of all, it was bullshit.

But maybe Colin Powell can be recruited to make a presentation to the UN proving that the Russians hacked our election. This time instead of holding up a vial of anthrax maybe he can hold up a flash drive.

What Clinton said was false and misleading. First of all, only two intelligence entities – the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – have weighed in on this issue, not 17 intelligence agencies. And what they said was ambiguous about Russian involvement. An unclassified October 7, 2016 joint DNI-DHS statement on this issue said the hacks . . . are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts. These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process. Such activity is not new to Moscow — the Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europa and Eurasia, for example, to influence public opinion there. We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities. Saying we think the hacks “are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts” is far short of saying we have evidence that Russia has been responsible for the hacks. Maybe high-level officials would have authorized them if Russian hackers were responsible, but the DNI and DHS statement did NOT say there was evidence Russia was responsible.

My education about how the US Government lies to it's citizens began when I was in the 7th grade at Largo Junior High School. That's when Eisenhower got caught lying about the U2 incident.

If the US government tells me Russia hacked our election I will give it the same credibility as I did when they told me Saddam had WMD.

I am so glad for you that the credibility of the US government will change remarkably after 1/20/2017!

Ever the loyal Trumpster and fan of authoritarian despots the world around. Putin thanks you. I suppose ignorance is bliss among Trump supporters.

Ignorance appears to be a prerequisite for a cabinet position.

Along with disdain for the Department one is to be administering.

I would not put it past Trump to go after regular civil service personnel even though their positions are protected by statute.

donquixote99 12-10-2016 09:33 AM

What statutes can give, statutes can take away. He's got a GOP congress.

But what I'd expect is an expansion in the depth of the 'top layer' of political appointees. Go from the current 4000 to maybe 30,000 or so. Who cares about the worker bees, if you've got ALL the decision-makers?

Very prescient, Ice. He's already doing so.

Donald Trump’s transition team has issued a list of 74 questions for the Energy Department, asking agency officials to identify which employees and contractors have worked on forging an international climate pact as well as domestic efforts to cut the nation’s carbon output.

The questionnaire requests a list of those individuals who have taken part in international climate talks over the past five years and “which programs within DOE are essential to meeting the goals of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan.”

Yes Pat that is what I meant. I wasn't talking about lower level guys like me but professionals whose experience actually makes the cabinet agencies run year in and year out. Men and women you probably actually know.

It'll be interesting to see whether DOE's Office of Counsel allows responses to questions about specific staff. They shouldn't.

Just what we need. A micro-managing twit who knows absolutely nothing about government, science, and/or civil service law. That'll work out just fine....NOT.

Obviously I didn't mean Trump himself should look at Ice's position.

He'll have "people" to do things like that.

They will be great people.

The best people.

They'll be able to spot a double dipping Goldbricker in no time. :)

Yeh, I'm sure having Trump henchmen wandering the halls is sure to boost morale.

Need to take a close look at those Federal Government contractors too.

See if there's any fat we can trim there too. ;)

Trump will have his chance. A recent study showed $125 billion in potential savings in DoD over 5 years. He said he was going to beef up DoD and use waste, fraud, and abuse as his funding source. Let's see if he follows up on this.

$125 Billion over 5 years!

That's only 25 billion a year.

Somebody is sandbagging the Hell out of that.

The proposed 2017 defense budget is $583 Billion.

http://www.defense.gov/News/News-Rel...udget-proposal

$25 Billion is about 4% of that.

There is a Helluva lot more waste than that.

How much of that $583 billion goes to private contractors?

That part could be cut by 90% for starters.

Tom Joad 12-10-2016 12:26 PM

Need to get back on topic.

There was no Russian hacking of the election.

Clinton lost because the Democrats threw the working class of the Rust Belt under the bus.

Now, the only question is does Obama have the chutzpah to order the intelligence community to lie about Russian hacking the way Bush and Cheney ordered them to lie about Saddam and WMD's?

No, he doesn't.

And you know that exactly how? I'd say it would be more accurate to say that you simply don't want to know whether the Russians tried to influence the election (much like der Trumpenfuhrer himself).

My comment was ironic, of course.

Here is a good old saying from the good old Fatherland regarding elections:

"The flies have changed, the shit remains the same."

You can say that again and let's not forget the incessant Trump bashing which people simply got inured to. So bad is bad but how good is good, really?

I am sure there was Russian meddling and interference during these elections. Hillary did her best to lose this election and Bernie takes the blame.

I am not qualified to judge your comment according to it's plausibility. However, this is exactly how I understand Trump's success.

On one hand, you are right, Pat. On the other hand: Why was Hillary not able to get into contact with the psyche of the deeply frustrated working class?

Two reasons, I think. First, she didn't think she needed to because she thought her appeal to younger voters, minorities, women and urban professionals would be more than enough to win.

Secondly, she pretty much said that old Rust Belt and coal mining jobs weren't coming back and that retraining for jobs in the new economy was what was they needed to do. They didn't want to hear that. Scapegoating immigrants was far more appealing (and required no responsibility or work on their part).

Plus, most of the nation was sick and tired of the Clintons and all their sleazy drama.

Because Trump played a better game, sucking up all the oxygen, while skillfully throwing sticky mud at her. With big help from Putin and the FBI.

And at that, Turmp did and does have huge negatives, and it was still super-close, don't forget. Trump could not have done it without the last-week assist from Comer.

Remember this data? Some very narrow margins in Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan....

Leaks of email hacks, and the last-week-surprise "reopened investigation." I'm identifying the latter as the killing shot.

Who is working for whom? Putin for the FBI or the FBI for Putin?

donquixote99 12-10-2016 05:27 PM

The only think I can say is the FBI has insisted that they can't find an Putin-Trump connection, a conclusion I don't totally trust, given other indications I've seen.

I was not maening to suggest that Puitin was running Comer or anything. Though who does run Comer is a interesting question.

I read somewhere that the intelligence community didn't want to share sensitive stuff with the FBI. Don't know if it's true, but I don't have a hard time at all believing different government agencies don't trust each other and/or don't communicate. That's pretty much as it is and always has been.

That may just have been a Tom Clancy Jack Ryan novel.

As of eight years ago I'd attest to finnbow's inter-agency trust/communication assessment based on first hand experience. Intra-agency too.
