“Lügenpresse”

Quote:

BERLIN — When a video of two Donald Trump supporters shouting “Lügenpresse” (lying press) started to circulate Sunday, viewers from Germany soon noted its explosive nature. The defamatory word was most frequently used in Nazi Germany. Today, it is a common slogan among those branded as representing the “ugly Germany”: members of xenophobic, right-wing groups.

How do we put the genie back in the bottle?

A Yuengling beer bottle?

More hysteria.

The term predates the Nazi.

It really means "lying press".

What should be substantive: Is the press lying? Is the press in collusion?
Is the press suppressing news? Is the press hyping? etc.

The press is perhaps concerned with finding paying customers. Some are true reformer/ crusaders.
Trump is low hanging fruit as both a subject and deserving target of scorn.

So, it's okay to use it then? The term is bereft of meaning beyond the literal?

You're in denial.... Americans shouting a German word? Where do you think they got it? From pre-Nazi German commentary? Please.

Given his oeuvre here, it's a reasonable inference.

Germany has become partly very ugly. It is a shame. It is such a shame. Interesting enough - most of these fucking morons are living in the former GDR - Saxony, for example. They are successfully ruining the reputation of Germany.

Sometimes I wish the 1990 "Wiedervereinigung" would not have taken place.

I suppose it's all relative.

The votes are in, America, and the best country in the world is ...

(Drum roll, please.)

It's Germany. Sorry, United States, you're fourth — right behind third-ranked Britain and second-ranked Canada. But, hey, America beat Sweden!

Sorry to hear that. Perhaps it's better I decided to stay here after I retired June 1989.
