EU refuses to back new license for glyphosate weed-killer.

EU refuses to back a limited extension to glyphosate weed-killers opening the possibility of Monsanto Roundup and other weed killers being removed from shelves.

I have to use gloves - need some protection; fire ants, yellowjackets, snakes - you can get your ass in some serious shit just pulling dandelions down here.

F%$king subtropical sweatshop hell hole - I bitch and moan every summer but we never move.

You could move to Alaska, and still the day you were out maintaining the landscape, it would be searing hot. And you've heard about the mosquitoes up there I assume....

I'm betting it's the boiled peanuts.

merrylander 06-06-2016 02:25 PM

Should ban it here also, glyphosphate is a known carcinogen.

It is my home town and it is beautiful, but the humidity seems to affect me more every year.

Trying to talk the Mrs. into Vermont.

Then my posts next year would read, "f%$king ice-bound, hipster-doofus playground - what the hell was I thinking?!"

:D

I've spent days weeding the yard and they still keep coming.

It's a war of attrition and we're doomed.

Kudzu is The Borg.

I understand that scientists at many deep South universities are working on genetic modifications that will make Kudzu edible and nourishing.

Please clarify: is that modifications to kudzu, or modifications to human beings?

They're working it from both ends. On the human side the focus is on our digestive tract and there should be no noticeable visual effects, but there will be a significant increase in fart jokes.

That would certainly make the ladies more attractive - standing on all fours chewing their cuds after a delicious genetically modified salad at Chez Weed.

How good is the argument that glysophate is really, really bad?

catswiththum 06-07-2016 08:19 AM

My wife wanted a rock garden so to clear the ground I used some of that shit and over the next few weeks I found two dead birds out there. Plus the weeds started back. So I switched to Pool Salt and so far no more weeds or dead birds.

I don't use it - unless I am feeling motivated enough to actually pull them up by the roots, they get the weedeater once a week and some more mulch thrown on top of them.

A few years back we had a West Nile scare here. The county overreacted and nuked the mosquito population. Killed all the insects. Birds moved away to find food. It was like Silent Spring.

merrylander 06-07-2016 09:15 AM

At the rate farmers are using it on genetically modified corn the cobs are likely loaded with it. I would not trust Monsanto at all.

I left a good part of my yard grow wild this year. Many of those "weeds" are putting lovely flowers, lots of them.

Monsanto, They have been for a few years now moving from chemicals to mono crops. Why? Because profit again. STERILE SEED which means you sow the seed, harvest the crop. BUT, you cannot save some of the seed to sow again because its sterile. SO, back to the seed supplier who can charge what the hell they like for you to buy more sterile seed off them. But the main thing to think about is, IF the seed gets a virus it cannot fight it off. Oh that's ok we will cross breed back to other varieties. MY ASS, the reliable varieties have gone. We have used mono seed. Why? profit for the few once again.

Wasillaguy 08-12-2016 10:57 PM

We don't have kudzu up here, but we have vetch. Luckily none in our immediate area yet.
As far as dandelions go, I've found a well fed and watered lawn will choke them out. I'm sure those who pay for water don't have that option though.

Pio1980 08-12-2016 11:11 PM

We have kvetch here in the forum, I don't know of a fix.

Well Modge back at the height of the Cold War Monsanto ran a nuclear lab called the Mound in Ohio. My late wife worked there as a young woman. She was over-exposed three times and she just died last year of ovarian cancer. To put it plainly Monsanto's careless handling of radioactive materials and other dangerous chemicals killed a lot of young women and men who worked there.

Hungarians Just Destroyed All Monsanto GMO Corn Fields
Posted by admin on August 24, 2016

Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech giant Monsanto and genetic modification by destroying 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar.

Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a 10 year ban on GM foods.

Smart people, them Hungarians. :)

merrylander 08-26-2016 10:33 AM

We are possibly the only nation that allows dairy farmers to inject cows with Monsanto's rBST growth hormone. No other western nation allows it.

Trouble is that Monsanto has such a big revolving door with the government they get away with murder.
