Question

I would like to know why the number of active members (15? 20?) did not increase since I started my "career" in this forum about three years ago, although the number of members increased pretty remarkably since then.

Actually getting to be a posting member here required some persistence on my part, in soliciting admin intervention. Maybe some people 'count' as new members, but unless they are similarly persistent in getting some attention, they never gain the ability to post.

There is no answer why members join but do not post.

Every member has the ability to post.

The strange thing is that none (or almost none?) of the last three years' new members became an active member. This is a fantastic forum and it actually deserves participation of a wider range of people.

I believe some are afraid of possible aggressive response to posting.

Yes. Further, posts don't have to be aggressive to be intimidating. The regular group here, with years of online experience, does argument at a level that is a fair ways beyond what unpracticed posters can match.

Discussing politics can be very contentious.

Pio1980 05-22-2016 01:00 PM

Dunno, mebbe.
It can get passionate, sometimes way too personal and outright hostile.
Still, there is room for reasonable discourse without the bomb throwing, namecalling, and personal attacks.

Political discussions become pretty rough sometimes, that is natural. But this is no reason to stay away from them if there is a serious political interest.

Texting has replaced writing and then there is Facebook and Twitter to occupy people on the internet.

I believe many just don't want to be involved in the perceived unpleasantness.

IMO, Joining in an established political venue can be daunting to a newbie who must prove their mettle to a tight group of long time players who tend to also have well honed swords. One has to be very well informed and intelligent, or very stupid to participate. I haven't decided which in which category I fall.....

You have strong and less strong points, as do we all, but you sure as poop aren't stupid. And you put the same thing I was thinking very well here, with a bit more poetry. (Dig, swords!)

Could you imagine how extremely difficult it had been to become a regular poster in a strange forum with strange people using a bizarre and strange language talking about strange topics?

JJIII 05-23-2016 11:06 AM

Ha! Good one, Chris!

I daresay only a very few people could pull that off. Stra....that is, unusual people. :)

I had to use my DOD email to get registered. All the others were marked as spam by the admin filter.
