At one time truck beds were wood. Aluminum is better then plastic, what it seems the trend is.

The frame of the new Ford truck is still steel. I'm no expert, but for the purpose of collision safety, the frame is going to transmit the impact of the crash, not the body. They're designing the cars / trucks to crumple in collisions anyway.

But, I think what everyone is talking about are dings and dents from grocery carts and crap like that. Not full on collisions.
