+1 and it takes both with the family taking the lead. Without a family a child would be lost in a society.

Perhaps in this sense it does. I grew up in a small village in Quebec where everyone in the village knew who I was. You were very careful about how you behaved in public, a) because any dumb acts would be brought to your parent's attention very quickly, and b) behaving like an a**hole in public would reflect badly on your upbringing. Not that it spoiled our fun because it sure did not.

Sure everyone knew everyone Else's 'business' but not in a bad sense. for example when an elderly couple got burnt out before the day was out an empty house was made available and furniture and food was provided.

No, but in some cases it takes grandparents. All it takes is a kid to forget everything good that they once were after hooking up with a bad crowd after turning 18 and saying ''you can't stop me, I'm 18 now and will party all I want to.''
