No argument here. It does appear however, that it's pretty close to half the people buying it, or if I might be so bold, using it as an excuse.

The enlightenment philosophy of the founders caused them to hope for good results if rational men of normal good will were in charge of things. This has often not been the way things worked out. Our civil war is the worst resultant disaster so far, but as bad or worse is possible. Make no mistake, this country, and the world, are always teetering on the brink of dictator-led megadeath disasters.

Republican democracy is the best-functioning model for human affairs we've come up with yet, but it's record is still marred with disastrous slips into tyranny and war. Perhaps some fundamental revision of the model would work better?
