Especially after being called to the headmaster's office yesterday.
But I really don't think he'll drop out. I think he'll take it to the convention, arriving still in possession of a delegate lead but without the necessary 1,237. After the first ballot, all bets are off.
I think we'll see all the non-Trump delegates and maybe even some Trump delegates, defect to a single candidate. It could even turn out that they draft someone like Ryan. That's when the riots start and when Trump declares his candidacy as an independent candidate.
It's worth remembering that the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention were sparked by a pretty similar scenario with Gene McCarthy, a peace candidate, having the lead but not enough delegates to win on the first ballot. After the first ballot, the non-McCarthy delegates all got behind Hubert Humphrey, a war hawk who hadn't even competed in the primaries. As you'll remember, Humphrey lost to Nixon and we all know how that turned out.
When that happened, all Hell broke loose. This huge mess and serious black eye the Democrats received from this goes a long way toward the decision to create Superdelegates. As Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, “Unpledged (Super) delegates exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists.”
