In the space of two weeks, the country witnessed two major announcements from the Department of Justice: the first federal indictment of a former president (Donald Trump) for unlawful retention of classified documents and related acts of obstruction, concealment, and false statements, and a guilty plea by the son of the sitting president (Hunter Biden) to federal tax and gun charges.
The identities of the defendants mark these as highly significant political events. And the responses to both sets of charges tell us a great deal about the competing visions of governance on display in the early days of the 2024 election—one vision that threatens to destroy core principles of American law, and one that seeks to safeguard them.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Moore v. Harper on Tuesday is a major reprieve for American democracy. By rejecting the radical idea that state legislatures have quasi-unlimited power to determine how elections are run, the court made it harder for lawmakers to engage in the shenanigans that Donald Trump encouraged to overturn his 2020 presidential reelection loss.
But the decision is better seen in a broader context: It’s one of many recent developments that show our democratic system is fortifying itself on many levels, unexpectedly reducing the odds of a rerun of Trump’s efforts in 2024.

I still expect the Red state legislators to continue to put up road blocks for voters, but in a national sense this may not matter if voting by mail is preserved and it seems to be since Republicans now are encouraging their voters to vote early and by mail.

A “standing order” that former President Donald Trump has claimed authorized him to instantly declassify documents removed from the Oval Office could not be found by either the Justice Department or Office of Director of National Intelligence.
The disclosure by the agencies was made in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed last August by Bloomberg News, which sued ODNI and the Justice Department’s national security division for a copy of Trump’s so-called standing order — if one existed.
Trump insisted that he had such a declassification order after the FBI found top secret materials at his Mar-a-Lago home last year. He has since been charged in the case by Special Counsel Jack Smith, making him the first former president to face federal allegations of criminal conduct.

Don't tell me that Trump lied? Say it ain't so, Whell! Help me!

More indictments! More venues! More witnesses!
Quote:
Just this afternoon, Andrew Feinberg of The Independent posted a barnburner predicting superseding indictments from the special counsel, spread over multiple jurisdictions.
Prosecutors are now prepared to “stack” an “additional 30 to 45 charges” on top of the 37-count indictment brought against Mr Trump on 8 June. They would do so using evidence against the ex-president that has not yet been publicly acknowledged by the department, including other recordings prosecutors have obtained which reveal Mr Trump making incriminating statements.
Feinberg, who accurately anticipated the first indictments in the documents case three weeks ago, writes that former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has “signed an agreement with the Department of Justice which memorialises his obligations to cooperate with any prosecution against Mr Trump or others in the ex-president’s orbit in exchange for consideration that will spare him considerable legal jeopardy.” Meadows played a central role in every part of the January 6 scheme: pressuring Georgia elections officials to claw back Biden’s electors; assembling the slates of fake swing state electors in concert with the Trump campaign and having them submit fake electoral certificates; ordering the Justice Department to investigate false claims of election fraud; and then finally coordinating the speech on the Ellipse and subsequent march on the Capitol.
Feinberg also writes that “special counsel Jack Smith’s team is ready to bring charges against several of the attorneys who have worked for Mr Trump.”

Trump was quite worried when Meadows answered the call of the DOJ and now we know why.

Here is a companion piece from the same publication.
Is Rudy Giuliani Trying To Cut A Deal With The Feds?
Someone doesn't want to get indicted....
Quote:
Whether or not the Special Counsel buys what Rudy is selling, this won’t go well for Trump.
— Former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi, in a tweet concerning Rudy Giuliani’s voluntary interview under a proffer agreement with federal prosecutors as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s January 6 investigation.

So Rudy wants to ride the bus rather than being thrown under the bus. The only good decision he has made in a long time.

And a link to this Salon article from your link...
“This won’t go well for Trump”: Experts say Giuliani “trying to avoid indictment” by cutting a deal
Comments by Norm Eisen, former legal adviser to George W. Bush, and former FBI AD Frank Figliuzzi believe even some moderate cooperation by Giuliani is bad news for Trump. Early on in the Trump presidency, presidential "legal czars" Eisen and Obama advisor Richard Painter, provided information on Trump's violations of presidential ethics violations by Trump. Eisen knows this stuff.
