The Quartet, by Joseph J. Ellis. A discussion of the efforts involved in and odds against enacting the US Constitution.

Ellis has quickly become one of my favorite authors. He has a novelist's style and a scholar's approach to history. In the past year, I have read his biographies of Washington and Jefferson, as well as Founding Brothers, and American Dialogue, the Founders and Us. American Dialogue is, I believe, his most recent. He looks as current issues, such as racism, income inequality, and international relations in light of the issues faced and the ideas advanced by the Founding Fathers. He has an especially cogent criticism of the intellectual dishonesty of the originalist theory of law espoused by Scalia and his ilk.

Author Tony Horwitz just passed away here in DC while on book tour - one of my favorite authors. Some of his great works include Blue Latitudes, Confederates in the Attic, Baghdad Without a Map, Midnight Rising. RIP, sir. You gave me many hours of enjoyment.

Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis.

Nearly 100 years after publication, it's still completely relevant. Sad!

On the “to read” list: Night of Camp David

Quote:
“What would happen if the president of the U.S.A. went stark-raving mad?” Back by popular demand, The New York Times calls the 1965 bestselling political thriller by the author of Seven Days in May, “A little too plausible for comfort.”

"Grant" by Ron Chernow. Quite a tome, but a very good read.

"The Soul of Baseball, A Roadtrip through Buck Oneil's America" by Joe Posnaski. I was first introduced to Buck in Ken Burns' great Baseball documentary, and had the good fortune to hear him speak in Kansas City a few times. This portrait of a man who lived through some of the worst racism in America and came through it with no bitterness is a good salve for what we have seen in recent years. As one of the reviewers said, "If your eyes aren't moist after reading this, the air is too dry in you coffin."

Regards,

D-Ray
