Farewell to the Washington Deadskins

"The Washington Redskins moved Friday toward what team owner Daniel Snyder once vowed was unthinkable: changing their controversial name in a bow to pressure from their largest corporate sponsors and the fierce winds of societal reckoning sweeping the country.

After years of resistance, the team said it was launching a thorough review of the name. It did not share any details of the process, but two people familiar with discussions among Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and league officials that led to Friday’s announcement said the review is expected to result in a new team name and mascot.

“You know where this leads,” one of the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “They’re working on that process [of changing the name]. It will end with a new name. Dan has been listening to different people over the last number of weeks.”" WP

'Bout damned time, Snyder.

Actually, I was up at 4:30, just like every weekday morning, going to go chase the weasel.

This comes up every few years. If enough sponsors balk, they'll change it - assuming other advertisers don't fill the void.

And old phrase, but still true. The left is about symbolism over substance. It's why crippled became disabled and became differently abled. It's why "colored person" became "black person", became African American person and finally became "person of color", going full circle, but also incorporating all "non-white" races.

But at the end of the day, the perception is the same. The new word(s) just means the same thing as the old words and carries the same cultural connotations.

Instead of messing with labels, one should address real problems and solutions. Ask the black family behind the Aunt Jemima brand how they feel about the change.

Keep in mind that getting rid of Aunt Jemima was hardly the first priority of BLM. It was Quaker Oat's idea of a good PR move right now. If you're all broken up about it, your beef is with the corporate types.

Sure it's just symbolism, but it's good symbolism, this imaging of darkies as happy servants is unfortunate and way out of date.

BLM wants more concrete things. Like, in Columbus Ohio it's come out that the rate of police killings per population is highest in the nation. here's what is demanded there. Note no rebranding on the list:

Quote:
A Response to Injustice in Columbus

8 Demands for Mayor Ginther and Columbus City Council

1.Fire Officer Rosen and Fire Officer Bare. Fire Officer Rosen for the killing of Henry Green and for kicking a handcuffed man in the head. Fire Officer Bare for the killing of Henry Green.

2.Terminate. End the “Community Safety Initiative” which enables officers like Zachary Rosen and Jason Bare to terrorize communities. This undercover policing program was formerly known as the “Summer Safety Initiative.”

3.Fire Officer Mason for the killing of Tyre King.

4.Publicly call for a special prosecutor in the grand jury hearing of Tyre King and the grand jury appeal of Henry Green.

5.Publicly call for an independent investigation in the case of Jaron Thomas and future incidents of police violence.

6.Fire Chief Jacobs for the protection of rogue officers and for the deletion of 100,000 dash-cam/cruiser videos.

7.Negotiate changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City and the Fraternal Order of Police.

8.Require officers to live in the communities they police. Make the Columbus Police Department (CPD) reflect the demographics of Columbus which is approximately 30% Black. The CPD should be at least 30% Black. The CPD currently has less than 10% of its officers classified as Black.

Pfft.

Native Americans actually like the homage the NFL pays to them with the names and mascots. It's a tribute to their fighting heritage. Seriously. I can post numerous interviews to back this claim up.

But the 'political correctness cause' over rules what they think. Apparently.
