I just finished the biography Levon. All of the Band (except Robbie) didn't like the idea of The Last Waltz because they saw it as a vanity project of Robbie Robertson directed by his BFF Martin Scorcese to help Robbie develop a post-Band Hollywood career/presence.

It was apparently sold to Robbie's bandmates as a means to solidify their financial futures after the Band, but they ended up believing that all of the film's earnings went up Scorcese's and Robbie's noses.

That said, it's a truly great concert film, second only to Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense IMO.
