Boyhood.
Fascinating concept. Monumental achievement over 12 years.
Not a particularly interesting story. A half-hour too long. I thought the best performance was from Ethan Hawke...I never thought Patricia Arquette was a particularly nuanced actress and I still don't.
It was good. Universal acclaim? I don't know about that.

I've been avoiding it because of the plethora of reviews just like yours.
We watched Whiplash several days ago. Pretty good.
Also, during a snow day yesterday, we watched Being There once again. Loved it (again).

Troy: Brad Pitt, Eric Bana
An excellent production, costing 175 million. Cheers to Hollywood. Cheers to
Americana.
It was a delightful trip to once again live a fav epic from my youth.
Seemingly about a face, but really it was about power.
Left the world with some phrases....Trojan horse, Beware Greeks bringing gifts,
Achilles heel.
From the movie - The Gods envy us. They envy us because we are mortal, because any moment may be our last.

I cried when my cousin Eric took the blade in his heart.

Yes Hector really gets a lot of sympathy.
He urges his father to send back Helen.
Was forced to defend his brother Paris although he did not approve of his stealing of Menelaus' wife.
Was rational: attributed the poor performance of the Greeks in a major battle to the absence of Achilles and not to the anger of the Gods as the reader of the Oracles was projecting. (Yeah there are soothsayers, witch doctors, in every nook and cranny at any time. ).

So...we watched the acclaimed Boyhood last night...eh.
Just finished watching the series premier of "Dig" on the USA Network. Holy shit! They're still showing repeats so if anybody might be interested...

Contrary to my leftist leanings, I have to confess to enjoying "Downton Abbey." We just finished watching the last episode of Season 5. It was a bit sappy, with all sorts of feel good moments. I would suppose that they oversold the happy moments to make up for the tragic ending to Season 3. Overall, I think the show's creative team has done a commendable job of creating characters with some depth and tension. Some might find that it detracts from the drama by softening the villains a bit; and some might take issue with stories that have elevated the character of the aristocrats, but damn, they do a good job of story-telling.
Regards,
D-Ray

My pleasure. It's very well done, the production qualities are pretty amazing in addition to the crazy story line. It's the murder mystery, plus the weird Christian cult, plus the Hasidic doomsday scenario.
Done by Gideon Raff of "Homeland" and Tim Kring of "Heroes" and other stuff.
And of course...the U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation is already pissing and moaning about the grant provided by the Israeli government for the filming of the pilot on location in Jerusalem. Some people just aren't happy unless they're trying to screw up everybody else's good time.
PS - I'm curious, did you ever get a chance to watch "The Drop"?
