The gun as a phallic symbol - a measure of manhood?

From FB:

Yesterday, while everyone was talking about guns, Congress let funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program expire. CHIP provided low-cost health insurance to 9 million American kids. No illegals used the program. CHIP was a program that partnered the Federal Government and States insuring children from low to moderate-income families. States still have some CHIP money available, but they are expected to drain the funding by the end of the year. POTUS, meanwhile, proclaimed yesterday as Child Health Day, saying: "I am committed to protecting and promoting the health and well-being of our Nation's young people." I wish he could be committed.

It's illegal to carry a toy gun on the Las Vegas strip. Real guns are OK.

I am reasonably sure the writers/thinkers responsible for the 2nd amendment never envisioned a future populated by growing numbers of nutcases with easy access to weapons of destruction unimaginable 100 years ago.

Federal legislation needs to make it at least as difficult to own a weapon as it is to obtain a driver's license. Registration is absolutely necessary and it is idiotic to think otherwise.

Plenty of responsible gun owners won't mind - a growing number of nitwits will. (usually with something to hide and unwilling to be in the system).

The above is all well and good, but will do nothing about the hundreds of thousands of firearms out there already in the hands of nutjobs, wannabe kid gangsters, doomsday preppers, and other garden variety malcontents.

We've had this conversation a hundred times - so has Congress. Here we sit.
Tread carefully, buy armor.

Cheers,

Your local conservative.

That is what I was telling my son the other day. To obtain a license to own and operate a weapon, you should undergo training, demonstrate proficiency, and guarantee safe storage.

I would like to direct your attention to a small detail, a remarkable one from the across the pond point of view, no American will notice it.

Paddock was client of various gun shops. One of them is named "Guns & Guitars".

"Guns & Guitars". Isn't that absolutely great? Killing instruments and music instruments together offered in one room as if it is as normal as the air we breathe. Reflect for a moment what this tells you about the mental state of your society.

I would like to mention again that I am very familiar with the attractiveness of guns. I grew up with the gun collection of my late father who was a very responsible owner (I still have his weapon license document). But when I started to use my brain (how old was I back then... about 16...) the sheer admiration turned into detesting. Well - now I got a rather nuanced view of guns. But I still can live without them.

A propos responsible gun owners - everybody of them could one day become an irresponsible one for various reasons (mental illness, for example).
