It is a problem. I'm sure they wouldn't pay the contractors (volunteers is the wrong word) $1700 if they could get real volunteers.

Just saying "this is how it's done" is a pitiful ethical defense. You could defend the research at Auschwitz with that argument. But I do recognize the necessity of human research, and probably the necessity of the $1700. I just see the PR-speak and facile justifications as a bit troubling.

I doubt very much that you would get subjects who are enjoying happy lives, I know much as I would like to help mankind there is no way I would do it.
