We Don't Need No Educashun
Lawmakers in West Virginia have voted to dismantle the state's Department of Education and the Arts just days after the longest teachers' strike in the state's history ended.
West Virginia Metro News reports that a bill dismantling the agency and spinning off some offices to other parts of state government passed Saturday and will now head to the desk of Gov. Jim Justice (R).
Among other provisions, the bill would eliminate the position of state Secretary of Education and the Arts, which is currently held by Gayle Manchin, wife of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.).
The bill passed the state House by a vote of 60-36, with Democrats opposing the plan that they say will destroy public funding for the arts in the state.

Well at this rate someday the red states will be too confused to know what the Constitutional Convention to Repeal the Electoral College was all about and then the Coasts will have control.

The Repubs have a point, but they are not going to use whatever savings may occur to improve the welfare of the teachers and students.

Funding the arts in West Virginia is a waste of tax dollars.

If you're intent on keeping it a cultural backwater, yes.

Although powerful, I don't have that much.
However I do think that is their intent.

With the cutting revenue via taxes thus forcing cuts to education as a result. This has been going on for a long time. Then add the vouchers movement also hurt.
Just how other countries implement and fund their education programs needs to be asked! Not teaching to a test that seems to be the way of the USA of late.

A friend of mine, a retired professor in mathematics, informed me that he had observed a severe deterioration in the ability of incoming students to deal with the mathematics required at universities.
