"Free market capitalism" = something that has never existed nor will we ever see it then, Pete. Cronyism can't exist within free market capitalism without the influence of government? I assure you it can. Honestly, I suspect it would get even worse, without a governing body to regulate and bust up monopolies.

Government control means regulated capitalism, not "crony capitalism"... or at least not necessarily.

Try this for size if you believe that we ever had a free market.

The US government is the biggest single buyer in the world.

That's a lot of patronage.

You mean like the two new aircraft carriers they are building that we certainly do not need.

So, what exactly is it about this fabled "free market" that would cause this to change?

For the better, that is.

Nothing is perfect but central planning is a proven disaster.

And who is it, precisely, who's arguing for central planning? Where is Secretary General Obama's latest Five Year Plan?

Honestly, you people astonish me. You say, without any evidence, that the other side is trying to take the country to one extreme and your solution is to push for the opposite extreme.

When you guys get your way this is what happens. Things start to come apart at the seams because the private sector is out of control. The country is facing a financial crisis so you demand a tax cut. When things get worse you say it's because the tax cut wasn't big enough so you demand another. Guess what happens next?

When businesses drive themselves into a ditch and the world economy faces imminent collapse you claim it's because of too much regulation. When deregulation is pushed through and things get worse you say it's because there's still too much regulation.

If it weren't so catastrophic it would be funny.

John

If the government is picking winners and losers....

The government should be an impartial ref. Transparency, trustbusting. Minimum standards. Did the great and mighty Dems regulate derivatives?

No because Alan Greenspan, the economic genius, and Robert Rubin and Larry Summers convvinced the Pres that it was not needed.
