Republicans have made very effective use of census data to gerrymander the entire freakin' country. In addition, it's people in their own whack job base who would be most likely to opt out. I suspect it's fear of losing a valuable tool that made them reconsider.

Issa's move to proceed with the the bill, H,R. 1078, had surprised census advocates because he is generally regarded as a Republican who values science and data.

Imagine that.

One key point that may have had an impact was that the change may have hit GOP districts the hardest. Small, rural areas would end up with the least credible data if the ACS were voluntary, largely because response rates would likely drop disproportionally in less-populated areas.

Issa is a feckin' moron.
