federal taxes are a much larger bite from your check than FICA
For most people FICA is more than income tax. It is a fixed rate. Somewhere close to 50% pay no net federal income tax at all.

The thing that safes the above statement from falsity is the qualification that that portion pays on federal income tax at all. FICA is clearly a federal tax, but one based on earnings rather than income. It is among the most regressive taxes that we have, and a significant burden on the working poor.

I pay a lot more in other taxes than I do in FICA, but that is part of the consideration I pay under the Social Contract.

'These Americans Hated the Health Law...

...Until the Idea of Repeal Sank In.'

"DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — Five years ago, the Affordable Care Act had yet to begin its expansion of health insurance to millions of Americans, but Jeff Brahin was already stewing about it.
“It’s going to cost a fortune,” he said in an interview at the time.
This week, as Republican efforts to repeal the law known as Obamacare appeared all but dead, Mr. Brahin, a 58-year-old lawyer and self-described fiscal hawk, said his feelings had evolved.
“As much as I was against it,” he said, “at this point I’m against the repeal.”
“Now that you’ve insured an additional 20 million people, you can’t just take the insurance away from these people,” he added. “It’s just not the right thing to do.”
As Mr. Brahin goes, so goes the nation.
When President Trump was elected, his party’s long-cherished goal of dismantling the Affordable Care Act seemed all but assured. But eight months later, Republicans seem to have done what the Democrats who passed the law never could: make it popular among a majority of Americans." NY Times

Thanks Trump.

Did McCain just kill this latest hateful attempt by the Repubes to end Obamacare? I sure hope so! He is one of very few Repubes with a conscience; plus he won't have to face the wrath of the repugnant Koch brothers with their campaign war chests, unlike so many in the House will in 2018.

Senator Collins will vote "no", along with McCain. Rand Paul has said "no" as well, but doubt he can be trusted. Would be more comfortable that this hateful legislation is dead if the Alaska senator was firmly opposed...
