Allegheny locks out 2,200 steel workers.

Allegheny Technologies locks out 2,200 steel workers in 6 states.

NPR "On Point" did an excellent cover on this dispute.
Workers make concession, CEO pay increased 70%

The workers need some political help here.

NPR podcast is available. recommended.

Ever since PATCO when Reagan locked out and allowed the replacement workers (scabs) stay on after any agreement.

Unions have been weakened ever since.

They need it, we should support them, but few people will.

It sucks and I hate it, but it's the truth. I will continue to voice support, though.

No fan of Reagan, but he did the right thing. PATCO organized an illegal strike (it is against Federal law for Federal employees to strike). IMHO, PATCO's illegal action left Reagan with no choice.

It's a legal tactic being employed by ATI, just as a strike by the workers would be. It's unfortunate that it occurred, but the employer is within its rights to do so, particularly after 3 months of negotiations that have now stalled.

From my understanding, the primary union objection is having to contribute to their health insurance insurance premiums for the first time. Like it or not, it is customary throughout the United States for employees to pay a contribution towards their health insurance premiums. I know I did, as do all three of my working children.

I understand both sides of the issue and take no side. Having not been a participant in the ongoing talks, I have no idea of whether the lockout is justified or not. It's up to the participants to work it out. I understand that if I were a Democrat, I'd feel obligated to support the Steelworkers' position, just as if I were Republican I would support ATI. I'm neither and therefore have the freedom to be agnostic and allow for the parties to sort out their own problems.

I find it galling that the company gave its CEO a huge raise while crying to the workers.

And why do we allow the Chinese to undercut us so much?

Not being party to the lengthy negotiations, I feel no need to take sides in the dispute.
