The Politics of Fear

This says it pretty well;

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/27/o...=fb-share&_r=0

Just as I have always believe the politics of guns to be entirely fear based, as in;

"America is a horribly dangerous place, the bad guys are everywhere and they want to KILL you and your kids. So you must buy a gun for every vehicle and every room in the house. And, of course, support the politicians who support your right to do so. This message brought to you by the friendly folks of Americas gun manufacturers and the Republican Party.".

I also believe a certain party in it's current form could not exist without widespread fear of the outside world. Outside the home and outside the country.

Take away fear and loathing of all things deemed "un-American" and what do they have?

POTUS is on record saying that background checks for guns and ammo for any terrorists in the USA is not needed. Hmm, just like freedom of speech is not needed.

Impeachment is gaining ground because it’s so horribly clear that Trump is unfit for office. The grownups around Trump, even the most slavishly loyal ones, spend half their time trying to rein him in, but it can’t be done.
Trump is in over his head? Really?

Too bad real patriots are being made to suffer for his glory.

Impeachment may not matter much. Middle and upper class Republicans may not care for the guy but like it or not, he has become something of a "Working Class Hero" among the blue collar Republican and labor-Democrats that elected him, despite the fact that he is FAR from working class. In fact, impeachment might unleash a backlash against any who supported it when the mid-term election season arrives.

We're in a pickle, Fellas. The only hope we have for a hobbling of this president is when, or if blue collar folks in the Midwest finally realize they've been had. So far, this is not quite happening.

When I brought up the specter of inflation* with friends and coworkers in regards to Trumps trade policies, I was laughed at. It seems these people are suddenly willing to pay substantially higher prices if it means success for Trumps plan.

(* My theory being that a 35% re-importation tariff and a 20% tariff on imported goods can't possibly do anything but drive up prices. Even if this does make it more economically favorable to return manufacturing to the United States, the higher cost of doing so will have a substantial inflationary effect.)

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufacturing return. I'm just wondering how happy Trumps supporters will really be when the cost of all of this reaches them at checkout...................

People in the hinterland will accept the increase cost if they feel that the president recognizes them.

No they won't. They don't want to pay a dime more than the lowest price they can find. We see that every day with the cheap Chinese tube stereo gear, which is a luxury good. It will be 100 times more resistant to basic necessities.
