Obama's One Term Failure
What will history write about the current POTUS 20 years from now? Will they lump him and Carter together as just inept, or will it be a completely different story?

Well compared with Bush's two term failure? You are jumping the gun a little bit. Deep down Fox News, Rush and Glenn Beck are all praying for his re-election....keeps the ratings going.
The last guy really needs the attention you are probably 50% of his audience.

Based on the thread title, your question assumes facts not in evidence. We'll see whether Obama's a one-termer or not. How history will regard him will depend on that.
By the way, Carter was significantly ahead of Reagan until soon before the election. If the Iranian hostages had been released prior to election day Carter would likely have maintained his lead.
Recognizing this, Reagan had Bill Casey convince the Ayatollahs to hold onto the hostages until after the election. In return Casey offered to provide arms to the Iranians (through Israel) and unfreeze Iranian assets in US banks.
And Casey got to be CIA Director.
Iran released the hostages at essentially the moment Reagan concluded his inaugural address. St. Ronnie the Traitor.

That he managed to stave off total collapse despite the efforts of the intransigent opposing party?

Obama could still do lots of unsavory, bad stuff and not hold a candle to Dubya in terms of incompetence. Not even close, actually.

Yep. Hence the Iran-Contra Affair. The release of the hostages was staged. Think about it; How obvious could it be? It was coincidence that the hostages are released DURING the inauguration, with the press set to give credit to a President that had been in office for what----4 seconds?
Anyone who fell for that purely theatric crap is so gullible it defies description.

Obama would have to nuke New York to top the Bush administration when it comes to underhandedness.

No, not at all. It dovetails nicely with their naive, childish belief that so many tough guy Hollywood legends actually were tough guys.
They often remind me of a mentally challenged fellow I met years ago who cried when someone told him WWF wrestling was fake. However, being retarded, he had an excuse. I don't know what their excuse is.
