Detroit experimented with improving fuel economy. Consumers simply took the savings and moved further into the suburbs. And paved their way there.
There is a bigger issue at hand IMO, and it is legislative. Automotive engineering has tried and failed at reining us in.

Huh? What decade was this that 'Detroit experimented with fuel economy,' enough that consumers felt a great windfall that expanded their housing choices? I think you're talking about the working-class white-flight of the 60's and 70's, the era when busing came in and blocks got busted. And I don't think anyone was sweating mileage and commuting cost much until the oil shock of '73.
There was a different and obvious dynamic motivating the 'white flight.'

You must be joking. Remember the Ford Pinto, Chevy Vega and Chrysler Omni/Horizon? IIRC, the first of the Chrysler's subcompacts actually used a VW fourbanger! So much for your Detroit experiment.
IMO, the concept of fuel economy became realistic to the Americans with the introduction of the Honda Civic in 1975. I still recall a six month wait when I bought a new Honda Accord in 1980.
And, automotive engineering caters to public demand and in Detroit it is usually done by adding bells and whistles.

Class Action Lawsuit Filed
http://www.latimes.com/business/auto...012-story.html
"California owners of Volkswagen diesel cars caught up in the emissions-test rigging scandal might have a shot at getting the German automaker to buy back the vehicles." LA Times
Good. Somebody needs to go to jail over this.

This is what I call "Selbst im Versagen versagen" which means approximately "Failing even in failure":
They also manipulated CO2 emissions. Okay, this is a deep swamp. But the way they fuck up in publishing the scandal, is a horror. They denied yesterday all day long what they today had to confirm...
It is so MISERABLE!

VW's reputation is taking a huge ass whipping as a result of this ongoing deceit. the thing to remember is that other manufacturers were able to make power and achieve fuel economy with out cheating. I wonder what peoples reaction to their reflashed TDI's will be when they have no power and do not get excellent fuel economy?

Yes, some Skoda and SEAT and of course Porsche models as well!
Due to the higher CO2 emissions, a lot of Volkswagen owners will have to pay higher car taxes from now on. Volkswagen announced to take over the higher taxes.
