Just finished "Three Came Home" by Agnes Newton Keith. Tale of a lady interned by the Japanese on Borneo for over three years. She, her young son, and her English husband (in a neighboring camp) all survived, as the title suggests. This was nearly impossible, and she gets the biggest credit for the outcome. But all that's a prisoner story like others.
This book's appeal is the voice and personality of the author. Her pluck and wit are never quite erased by circumstances, and they make the narrative, for all the privation and brutality recounted, nonetheless appealing. And her short introduction is eloquent of the deeper insights that inform this book. I'll reproduce it here:
It was a popular book when it came out in 1947, so you could find it used if you looked. There's also a movie 'based' on it, with Claudet Colbert--fictionalized plenty, to judge by the poster....

Just really read the reproduction section of your post...indicative of deep
thoughts and quality writing.
The book is noted. Thanks!

I am still on THE AENEID.
This is going to take some time.
Robert Fritzerald translation is best read after dinner while sipping
something with fortification.

Just finished War and Peace!!!!!!
took me about 100 days
Well worth it. The second epilogue is pretty tough going but it is the very end of the book and not very long. The rest of the book is very easy to read. Tolstoy is fantastic because he is easy and fun to read...that is why while long his famous book does not feel very long.
I have the Count of Monte Cristo for 2015. And I might tackle Proust's In Search Of Lost Time.
I am starting to hit the book sections at the thrifts now as well as the bpc aisle.

Up next is 'Living History' by Hillary Rodham Clinton as soon as I finish the last couple chapters of 'The Last Lion'.

Just finished the joint biography of Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell, "Sound and Fury." I remember much of the history described in the book. The intersection of two radically different lives makes for fascinating reading.

I have just sort of dipped my big toe into Marcel Proust's In Search Of Lost Time.
We will see how it goes...I am reading it on a clunky Creative Ziio tablet.
I have come to realize that Masterpiece Piece Theater productions are watered down versions of classic literature. In other words if you like period pieces this is where to go.

it is official. Stephen King and George R. R. Martin will have to wait.
This book is nothing like I have ever read and it is difficult. I think the guy knew about psychedelia way before LSD. It is actually 3500 pages long but broken up into 7 books.
