This is something of a jerk sideways but from what I've read, radioactive waste has to be kept cool and not allowed to accumulate in one place. What happens to the heat given off? Does it just go to waste?

I don't know. But I know that they were going to encapsulate it in barrels or something before stuffing it down a hole at Yucca. I'll have to ask my dad.

I think aftter putting a set amount in a barrel they somehow encapsulate it in glass, no way it can leach into the environment. That said even though the Calvert Cliffs nuke is not that far from us I feel more thretened by the natural gass drillers because we depend on our well for water and I don't like the taste of diesel fuel.
