Chicago investigators are questioning four African-Americans after a Facebook Live video shows a group of people torturing a white mentally disabled man while someone yelled "F*** Trump!" and "F*** white people!"

Chicago police were made aware of the video Tuesday afternoon. A young African American woman streamed the video live on Facebook showing at least four people holding the young white man hostage.

I am absolutely sickened this morning on so many different levels I don't even know where to being. To hear, in the video, this defenseless kid crying while essentially being tortured feels like a knife in the heart.

There are so many ways to comment on this story - hate crime, racism, picking on a defenseless disabled child, political intimidation, etc. - but all I can hear in my head now is this kid crying while these racist assholes make him drink toilet water.

For a case like this, justice would be to have them stand in shorts in front of Watertower Mall in Chicago. Hang a sign on each on of them that explains to passers-by exactly what they did, and let the good citizens of Chicago dispense whatever justice they see fit. Leave some stones in convenient locations nearby for good measure.

So we see why 'hate crimes' do require special attention. They have especially bad effects, awakening fear and 'reciprocal feeling' in large numbers of people beyond those directly involved.

I agree that they should be punished for a hate crime and, if convicted, receive the enhanced penalties for such crimes. But we should leave vigilante justice out of it so as to not escalate the level of violence and encourage hate crimes by other groups, who might purport to act under the justification of "vengeance."

The 'public stoning' is obviously a non-starter as a serious policy proposal. I was referring to the power of hate crimes to inspire such thoughts. This example might inspire some who scoff at the very idea of 'hate crimes' to step back and think again.

No Facebook, most likely no video and maybe not even happening without these websites.

As the father of a child with disabilities, I can confirm that no website or video is required for people to be inhumane to kids or adults with disabilities.
