It was totally unnecessary.
Japan surrendered because the Soviet Army had invaded Manchuria and would have run over them in short order.
In fact it was the Soviet Army that also defeated the Germans.
The rest of the world owes a great debt to the Russian people who scarified the most to defeat Hitler and to win WW2. They lost over 20 million people in that effort. Think about that next time you watch "Saving Private Ryan".
