Chas our neighbor had to take out what was left of their copper pipe and put in PVC. Our place was built with PVC from Charlotte pipe in the first place. These acid neutralizers are built just up the road in Lancaster PA, guess this is a common problem in the area, what with prevaling winds and all those coal fired power plants to the west of us. It basically is a tall (about 50") fiberglass tank with a long tube like a hot water tank, water comes in at the top and runs through Calcite, a type of rock from GA, up the tube to the rest of the house. Periodically a timer closes a bypass valve and reverse flushes the Calcite through an outdoor vent, so it waters the bushes along that side of the house (and anyone else who happens to be there at 2:00 AM). You have to periodically replenish the Calcite as it dissolves.
