A good read. Right in the middle, I found i was actually still able to be a little shocked at the results of a 2011 'values survey.' Emphasis added:

The Guradian piece you just linked to, by Jonathan Freidland, opines a little on that. Friedland thinks the Trump supporters are so angry about establishment lies that Trump gets a pass for his:

And Freidland's right. Trump won because he pointed out the truth his base already knew, did it as an outsider in an establishment primary and beat-up the lying ass establishment politicians in a nastily funny way. In addition, Trump has been a BS artist since he came on the public stage which is why many don't take his outlandish statements too seriously.

but the bottom line here is that Trump did not play by the rules as traditionally practiced and that made folks uncomfortable.

Any pol says about anything.

Clinton was a case study in avoiding being pinned down to not alienate any voter.
