The Enlightenment was skin deed. It did not prevent the state from grabbing the religious symbols, accoutrements and mimes to employ in the suppress and control of the people.
All those states that were supposed to be exposed to this Enlightment went to Africa under a God head and wreaked havoc.

I of course would never claim that enlightenment values well all-pervasive in the west, erasing all the old time religion and stuff. And particularly in wartime, or when dealing with non-white others, big exceptions were made.

What is more telling is the length of time after the official age that its projection did not apply to non whites.
