Lots of injured players on the Angels which I guess is usual this late in the season. It looks like the team was out for blood after those Mariners spanked them earlier in the season. I thought I heard a barrage coming from Anaheim last night, I figgered it was the nightly fireworks from Dizzkneeland.

I'm sure it shoots straighter than me.

Good on the Os but I would still rather watch paint dry.

I was a baseball fan until the doping years. And when MLB decided they would not correct the record books I lost interest for good.

So when I need a baseball fix...I drag out my copy of Ken Burns' Baseball. I watch a few episodes, and get my needed infusion. Real sports heroes. Walter Johnson, Gehrig, Jack Robinson (Rachel always called him "Jack" so I suspect it's what he preferred), Curt Flood, Yaz, Clemente.

It's just difficult for me to be interested anymore when Barry Bonds is in there with his big swollen head and his season and lifetime HR records, and Roger Maris' season record had this smudge on it for decades, even though there was no actual asterisk.

How does drug help a baseball slugger?

Same way it helps any athlete. You get stronger and faster. If it's some sort of data you're looking for...

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hitting/hihr6.shtml

As doping increased beginning in the late 1980's there is a clear pattern in the increase of home run production in MLB. Most notably between 1998 and 2006 when total home runs exceeded 5,000 for 8 straight years. Although doping was officially "outlawed" by MLB in 1991, effective enforcement was negligible and use was rampant until the late 2,000's. Since 2006, there has been only one year, 2009, where home run production exceeded 5,000.

Again...my problem is that there are players in the record books that don't belong there.

Quote:
Between 1998 and 2009, 10 more players reached 500 career home runs, easily the largest increase in membership in baseball history. Of the 10 players, six -- Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Mark McGwire, Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro and Gary Sheffield -- have been linked to PEDs.
Don't know how Sammy Sosa escaped this list.

I feel much the same about the O's. The Nats, however, are another matter altogether.

Cards magic number is down to 7 tonight.
Taking the NL pennant again is certainly feasible, but taking the WS will be a chore for either STL or the Nats.
The Nationals record is benefitting from being in a weak division. They're good, but pretty much a match with the Cards, IMO.
