During an interview on Fox News, DeSantis praised Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, as “an articulate spokesman” for those holding “far-left views,” but warned he would be damaging to the state.

“The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a so************************t agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state,” DeSantis said. “That is not going to work. That’s not going to be good for Florida.”

A Fox News Channel host later said on air that the network did not condone DeSantis’s language. In an interview on the network Wednesday afternoon, Gillum suggested that DeSantis was following President Trump’s example.

“Yeah, that part wasn’t lost on me,” Gillum said when asked about DeSantis’s remarks. “It’s very clear that Mr. DeSantis is taking a page directly from the campaign manual of Donald Trump.”

“If he thinks that in today’s day and age Florida voters are going to respond to that level of division and derision, they’re sick of it,” he added.

Asked about DeSantis’s comments by reporters following an event on drug-free communities at the White House, Trump said he “didn’t hear” the Florida Republican’s remarks but continued to praise him, calling him “extraordinary.”

“He’s an extreme talent,” Trump said.

They're using bullhorns instead of 'dog whistles' these days. Must be a Trump endorsed candidate.

As the commenter I just saw rightly observed, 'monkey it up' is not in any way a common, ordinarily-used phrase. This phrase was undoubtedly chosen deliberately to be just the racist dog-whistle it sounds like.

Fresh off 'monkey this up,' DeSantis forced to quit moderating racist Facebook group

Quote:
DeSantis was an administrator of a Facebook group filled with racist images and comments—or, he was until his participation came to light and he had to quit the group.
Quote:
A quick look at the group shows a cesspool of racism, misogyny, and general meanspiritedness (including lots of vicious jokes about the death of Sen. John McCain). DeSantis was one of 52 administrators for the group … at least until Wednesday, when his participation was reported right as he was trying to argue that “monkey this up” was not a racist dog whistle.

It took Ron DeSantis one day after becoming the Republican nominee for governor of Florida to show that he’s a flaming racist. We really don't need any more evidence—but chances are, he’s going to prove it again and again over the next 68 days

He wasn't the only one.

Five Republican candidates vying for seats in the U.S. House and Senate in November's midterms appear to be current or former administrators of a far-right Facebook group that has pushed debunked conspiracy theories and made racially charged posts about Muslims and black people.

The Facebook group, Tea Party, has nearly 95,000 members. Its description reads: “Please add your friends to the oldest and largest #TeaParty group on Facebook. We proudly stand with President Trump and his America First agenda!”

The group has a history of pushing far-right conspiracy theories, such as Pizzagate, the debunked theory that Hillary Clinton and other Democratic officials ran a child sex trafficking ring out of a Washington, D.C., pizza shop; last year’s white nationalist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia; which members of the group have falsely claimed was “orchestrated by the left”; and the murder of Seth Rich, a former Democratic National Committee employee whom far-right followers have falsely asserted was murdered by a Democratic operative to help Hillary Clinton.
