Crimea has been a part of Russia since 1783, and has no historic ties to Ukraine.

Almost half the Ukraine population, especially that in the east, are ethnic Russians and prefer closer ties with Russia.

I would not say they prefer closer ties with Russia.

I believe they are suspicious of the other side, especially since that side
wants to deny them of their language.

However the majority of Ukraine wants visa free travel to Europe.
