DUNN, N.C. -- The Dunn Police Department is investigating the theft of an AR-15 assault rifle from the home of U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers.

Investigators said they were called to the home on Kingsway Drive last Wednesday for a report of a breaking and entering.

According to a police report, Bret Ellmers' said the rifle was left leaning against a gun safe the day before in the garage, which had been left unlocked. Bret Ellmers told officers he and his son had left the rifle in the garage after going target shooting. The report does not say whether the weapon was loaded.

The gun, a gun case, and a GPS unit were taken. The total value of the items was put at $1,100.

Ellmers spokesman Thomas Doheny says the congresswoman was in Washington when the rifle was stolen but declined to discuss details, citing the ongoing police investigation. He added that, as a mother, Ellmers is concerned that the rifle was left unsecured.

"Her family is very big on gun safety and she wants to get to the bottom of this herself," Doheny said.

Ellmers is a political conservative aligned with the tea party. In the 2012 election she was endorsed by the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun groups.

No biggie, Carl. I'll bet she got a Bush Master in her NRA gift basket once she was elected. I'll bet Wayne already has a new one in the mail to her as we speak.
The story so far about this babysitter in Texas is that she left a loaded .40 caliber semi automatic handgun on the coffee table when she went to take a nap. The 5 year old boy found it and somehow shot himself dead. WTF is wrong with people? This story is just sad and more than a little sickening.

Here's more detail on the boy with the fake gun:

"One of the deputies described that as the subject was turning toward him the barrel of the assault rifle was rising up and turning in his direction. The deputy feared for his safety, the safety of his partner, and the safety of the community members in the area. He believed the subject was going to shoot at him or his partner. The deputy described that he is aware an assault weapon of this type is capable of firing a bullet that can penetrate his body armor, the metal exterior of his car, and the walls of the residential houses behind him. The deputy then fired several rounds from his service weapon at the subject, striking him at least one time."

Horrible.

Tragic but they are making air guns today that mimic the real weapon in great detail so the boy knew it was a fake but the cops did not.

Here is another from yesterday. It looks like they were all very very lucky.

Quote:
Three children were injured by shrapnel after a fellow elementary school student pulled the trigger of an assault rifle mounted on a police motorcycle during a school assembly, authorities said.

The AR-15 was locked to the side of the motorcycle that was on display at Newman Elementary School on Wednesday during an anti-drug program when a student managed to fire it, Chino police spokeswoman Tamrin Olden said.
