The depressing psychological theory that explains Washington

"Oftentimes when we think we're engaged in reasoned policy discussion we're actually engaged in complex efforts to rationalize the direction in which our tribal affiliations are pushing us. Psychologists call this motivated reasoning."

Interesting stuff:

I find this to be quite accurate with rare exception.

The reaction to attempts by the Obama administration to drum up support for action in Syria was interesting. The left opposed it, despite the fact that it was a Liberal Democratic President pushing for it. The right, I suspect, opposed it because it was a Liberal Democratic President pushing for it. Would it have turned out differently if there had been a Republican in the Oval Office at the time? I don't know. But it is an interesting thought experiment.

Yes. If an issue is politicized, that is, if it becomes symbolic of political affiliation, we tend to think what 'people like us' are supposed to think. 'Opinion leaders' let us know what that is. BTW, you can be kicked out of positions of trust or profit (like a magazine editorship) if you aren't wearing the right tribal colors, opinion-wise.

It'a a question of identity, that's all.

Yep. You not a real ______ if you don't help push the agenda in sum total.
