A popular saying up here- "we don't go fishing, we go catching."

I remember one weekend silver salmon fishing from the beach in Valdez. They only run in close at high tide. This yuppie next to me is playing a fish for the whole high tide on his ultralight setup, so he can brag that he landed a 18-19lb fish.
In the meantime, my wife, son, daughter, and I are using our king poles and had a pile of 14 fish on the beach. We are there for the meat!

For kids, you take them when the pinks run on even number years. They'll bite anything, including an empty hook, and a 7-8 pound fish is pretty exciting for a 4 year old.

I sure do miss silver catching on Eyak Lake and Eyak River. Some of the best fishing er...catching ever.

The cutthroat trout in Power Creek were so thick you could almost walk across them. Throw out a treble hook and catch three....

Once in every dozen years or so we catch Kings off Newport Beach. I scored a 12 lb. from a skiff rented from our local landing. These salmon were down below the thermocline right about 125 ft. I had talked to a skipper of one of the local partyboats and he clued me in. I've gone fishing from Monterey and caught them but never this far south.

I suppose it depends where you're fishing. I caught a 35# and a 50# King on the Kenai River downstream from Soldotna. OTOH, you're only allowed one King per day, two per year on the Kenai. Then again, 85# is a lot of salmon.

I caught some crabs with my pole in Korea. Too small to eat, though. And I'm not so sure you'd want to, considering where they'd been.

Considering the place caught, Newport Beach bell buoy at the harbor mouth, I'll take it. Smoked up fine. How many have you landed south of L.A.?

Old Bay will make it all taste like blue crab.

Them's city chiggers. My Uncle Hutch used to be a big fan of the Blue Ointment.

"Put on that old Blue Ointment --
To the crabs' disappointment.
Rub it in three or four times a day.
Oh, my Lordy how it itches But it kills those sons-of-bitches
In the good, old-fashioned way!
