This is clearly a violation of states rights. The Feds are pursuing this because it has slowed down the filling of all the new privatized prisons that have been built to house non-violent drug offenders. Nintey percent of the prisoners housed in our new county jail are there for drugs.

The new scam is to "lease" the prisoners out to the state to pick up trash along highways and interstates, They also work landscaping county buildings, and many other menial jobs. The state and county pay minimum wage to the corporation that owns the jail and the jail pays the inmates thirty cents an hour. The corporation pockets the rest and makes a nifty profit off the inmates. The inmates can buy candy bars and such from the commissary at full street mark ups. More profit.

This is all on top of sixty dollars a day, per inmate, to house them and feed them cold meals twice a day. No cooking involved. One sheriff brags that he feeds his inmates green baloney on stale bread twice a day seven days a week. Good food is available if the inmate has money from outside sources to buy the better food. More profit.

The prison industry will not stand for having their cash cow go away in one of the largest states in the US. They have lobbied and the result is the Feds are going to rush in and arrest a bunch of folks to fill the privatized jails and prisons.

There is a reason why the US has the worlds largest prison population in the world at 735 for every 100,000 people. Russia is second and Rawanda is third. Look at any prison population chart and you will see the huge increase since 1980 when the War on Drugs escalated.

The reason we have the largest prison population in the world is a simple one word answer. MONEY

Shhhh. They don't want anyone to know. Were you aware that the prison industry lobbying group was responsible for drafting the Arizona law cracking down on undocumented aliens. Bodies in cells = dollars in the bank.

Ah, the widow. Haven't had any of that since my grower got busted years ago. I see the news is giving Obama lots of credit for this toughening of the Federal laws. I wonder if that will hurt him with some of his base. Mark Twain once said; "It is the prohibition that makes anything precious". Saw that the other night on a PBS special on the liquor prohibition era.
