I just got back from a business trip to Big Spring, Texas, and experienced the same thing. In my neck of the woods we don't make eye contact with strangers, and keep pretty much to ourselves. Southern hospitality is no myth! I quickly realized that my normal behavior would be considered rude so I quickly adapted. It wasn't hard with folks being so darned friendly and nice. The week before I was in Las Vegas. I enjoyed Big Spring so much more, even though it was 100 degrees and there was virtually nothing to do after hours.

Just a friendly warning, Kentucky AIN'T the friendly, graceful South. Hope I saved a few souls with that public service message.. It pretty much stops at the Tennessee border.

Something we can agree upon!

I was going to post something similar. I lived in southern Indiana for a while. That region, southern Indiana and Kentucky, feels southern in some ways, but I found the people to be insular, xenophobic, and generally have a sour and bitter demeanor. Very unpleasant. The people in the NY Metro may often be brusque due to the pace of life, but as a generalization NYers are friendly, helpful, and want outsiders to like the area.

JonL:

My wife and I laugh about that. When we were searching the US for where we gonna live after California, I wanted Kentucky. So we looked in Louisville, Lexington, and their burbs. Several times, even with the realtors, it got very creepy. ALL the stuff you listed plus a huge disdain for Californians on TOP of that.

At the time -- the Kentucky motto on the license plates was ---

It's That Friendly!

You always advertise to bolster your biggest weakness.. So when the wife sees that kind of advertising now -- she'll turn to me and repeat the motto...

But good golly their moonshine is the best I've ever had.

My experience with the south is a little bit of the Carolinas, n & s. Very friendly.

In fact, driving near Aiken SC I thought, these drivers are idiots. ALWAYS a problem at EVERY intersection.

Then I realised - it was me True story. I was the ass

Btw, I don't know what it is now, but Clevelands motto for a while was, 'New York may be the big apple, but Clevelands' a plum!'. They had freakin' posters of plums on the bus stops! The huge manatee.

And when I lived in Indiana it was "Hoosier Hospitality!"

In fairness, once you got up a little south of Indianapolis it was generally much better. More typically midwestern in feel.

Then they changed the motto to "Amber Waves of Grain." Which I never understood. When I think of "amber waves of grain," I think of wheat fields, not cornfields. I never saw any wheat in Indiana. Lot's of corn, no wheat.

I think that's my favorite Pete story yet!

One thing you'll notice.. People respond to blinkers here. ((except Cadillac drivers of course)) NICE!

PS.. Like the NBA humor too..

JonL: They came up with "amber waves of grain" just before the ethanol subsidies hit (probably). Didn't have a choice. No "purple mountain majesty" or "fruited plain".
