How the Government Killed Martin Luther King, Jr.

I've heard very little about this.

Anyone think there is anything to it?

I certainly don't trust the government to tell the truth.

How the Government Killed Martin Luther King, Jr.

Quote:
Before scoffing at this headline, you should know that in 1999, in Memphis, Tennessee, more than three decades after MLK's death, a jury found local, state, and federal government agencies guilty of conspiring to assassinate the Nobel Peace Prize winner and civil rights leader. The same media you would expect to cover such a monumental decision was absent at the trial, because those news organizations were part of that conspiracy. William F. Pepper, who was James Earl Ray's first attorney, called over 70 witnesses to the stand to testify on every aspect of the assassination. The panel, which consisted of an even mix of both black and white jurors, took only an hour of deliberation to find Loyd Jowers and other defendants guilty. If you're skeptical of any factual claims made here, click here for a full transcript, broken into individual sections. Read the testimonies yourself if you don't want to take my word for it.

It really isn't that radical a thing to expect this government to kill someone who threatened their authority and had the power to organize millions to protest it. When MLK was killed on April 4, 1968, he was speaking to sanitation workers in Memphis, who were organizing to fight poverty wages and ruthless working conditions. He was an outspoken critic of the government's war in Vietnam, and his power to organize threatened the moneyed corporate interests who were profiting from the war. At the time of his death, he was gearing up for the Poor People's Campaign, an effort to get people to camp out on the National Mall to demand anti-poverty legislation – essentially the first inception of the Occupy Wall Street movement. The government perceived him as a threat, and had him killed. James Earl Ray was the designated fall guy, and a complicit media, taking its cues from a government in fear of MLK, helped sell the "official" story of the assassination. Here's how they did it.

Last year, I went to the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis (in the old Lorraine Hotel where he was shot). A number of the exhibits made it pretty clear to me that the government was definitely involved in his shooting.

After four weeks of testimony and over 70 witnesses in a civil trial in Memphis, Tennessee, twelve jurors reached a unanimous verdict on December 8, 1999 after about an hour of deliberations that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy. In a press statement held the following day in Atlanta, Mrs. Coretta Scott King welcomed the verdict, saying , “There is abundant evidence of a major high level conspiracy in the assassination of my husband, Martin Luther King, Jr. And the civil court's unanimous verdict has validated our belief. I wholeheartedly applaud the verdict of the jury and I feel that justice has been well served in their deliberations. This verdict is not only a great victory for my family, but also a great victory for America. It is a great victory for truth itself. It is important to know that this was a SWIFT verdict, delivered after about an hour of jury deliberation. The jury was clearly convinced by the extensive evidence that was presented during the trial that, in addition to Mr. Jowers, the conspiracy of the Mafia, local, state and federal government agencies, were deeply involved in the assassination of my husband. The jury also affirmed overwhelming evidence that identified someone else, not James Earl Ray, as the shooter, and that Mr. Ray was set up to take the blame.

Wow!

Anything is possible. I know the powers that be was terrified of King's enormous influence and especially his ability to awaken white folks'
conscience.

This is something I really have no knowledge about.

I think I'm going to check out some things on the net.

Here's the NY Time's report, from 1999, on the civil trial in Memphis: http://www.nytimes.com/1999/12/09/us...s-killing.html

I tend not to believe in big conspiracies, and this seems pretty big. I tend to go with the narrowest possible interpretation of actual facts.

I'd be interested in what the evidence was that you saw, Finn.

I can't remember the details, but they sure seemed pretty overwhelming at the time. I had absolutely no knowledge, nor preconceptions about his shooting, but lots of stuff exhibited there that left me very uncomfortable.

Though Memphis is mostly a pretty dumpy city, it's well worth a visit for a music fan. Sun & Stax Studios and Graceland are all interesting and it's not far down to Clarksdale in the Delta. My wife and I did a "Blues Pilgrimage" there last year.
