Pointlessly so. Kasparov spends toe first three quarters of the op-ed castigating Obama without offering any ideas of his own. Then, in the last quarter of the piece, he declares that Obama's more recent actions are an improvement and then recommends that the US administration do...... exactly what it's doing.

I disagree. He was slamming the entire western establishment, and says, it's about time!

Kasparov one sided argument.

No mention of the eastern march of NATO.

I am personally glad that there is some sanction.

The oligarchs will have to invest more of the loot in Russia
instead of France and Britain.

Russia is a huge country which can benefit from internal trading,
internal investment. Self sufficiency should be the mantra.

Latest - the remark is no fake. A lot of harsh remarks from the West expressing their impotence and powerlessness. Obama said Russia is a regional power (and not a world power). Well Russia still has enough power to destroy the USA instantly, in this case of course Russia would be destroyed as well - and the rest of the world...

I hope that the entire issue does not escalate - sometimes 2014 reminds me of 1914. Much more the situation reminds me of the cold war. I thought the world community overcame this threatening crap.

“I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan.”

President Obama

The crux of the biscuit is the short-sightedness.
