Donald Trump has a boatload of problems. Ann Coulter, the author of a 2016 book titled “In Trump We Trust,” is now one of them.

A week ago, when he signed a $1.3 trillion spending bill with nothing for his promised border wall, her frustrations with him, expressed frequently in her syndicated columns, turned into fury. “Congratulations, President Schumer!” she tweeted to more than 1.9 million followers. She also fantasized on Twitter about his impeachment.

During an appearance at Columbia University on Tuesday night, she referred to him as a “shallow, lazy ignoramus.” And during a long conversation with me at The Times on Thursday afternoon, she sent him a warning about the wrath he’d face if the wall doesn’t rise: “The Former Trumpers should keep Donald Trump awake at night.”

Coulter isn’t just any Trump critic. She was one of his earliest, most prominent — and fiercest — advocates. He came down that escalator and ranted about Mexican rapists and she swooned. Understandably: His diatribes against immigrants were cribbed from her 2015 best seller, “¡Adios, America!: The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole.” It was published around the time of his campaign announcement. She had sent him an advance copy.

“Perhaps no single writer has had such an immediate impact on a presidential election since Harriet Beecher Stowe,” David Frum, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, later observed in The Atlantic.

The comments in the WP doesn’t entertain me anymore. The Trump presidency is so indefensible and offers so much in illegal, immoral and unethical behavior that everybody essentially agrees. There is no opposition worthy of debate as there is so little an honest person can defend. So us on the left preach to the choir. Those on the right either defend the indefensible, repeat proven lies or complain about Clinton or Obama. There is no debate worth reading. There is very little humor clever enough to invoke a smile (The pillorying of Trump’s lack of intelligence and curiosity is so obviously redundant it has lost all ability to amuse or even offer relief to our angst). The commentators on the right used to be clever and funny if mostly untruthful. The left had plenty of clever responses with thoughtful indignation. The right could infuriate and then the left could respond with clever retorts. The left has been abandoned by any thoughtful or clever adversary. So we just keep talking about how bad the idiocracy is. I am not blessed with cleverness. But I do enjoy clever discourse. Without opposition there seems to be very little inspiration for entertaining commentary. The debate of ideas is over. We are just waiting for Mueller to drop the mic.

Wouldn’t you know — millionaires, billionaires, relatives and generals who have not served in high civilian posts aren’t necessarily the best people for senior roles in an administration, especially one in which the president has virtually no policy expertise. Contrary to the positive spin that Trump is now getting the Cabinet he wants (was he not president before this?), he’s in fact getting the dregs, the cranks, the Fox News personalities and the even more unqualified hangers-on to backfill posts. Some of the worst of the worst — Carson, Pruitt, Kushner — remain. With the possible exception of Mike Pompeo replacing Tillerson at State, the quality of his senior advisers generally is going down (e.g., Ronny Jackson for Shulkin, John Bolton for McMaster). Don’t expect it to improve with the Russia investigation ongoing and Trump’s habit of humiliating appointees well known.

Experienced, ethical, sober and self-respecting public servants don’t want to work in this White House. Trump spinners who assured us during the campaign that everything would work out because stellar people would be there to help were horribly mistaken.
