This is one reason I left real estate. I don't like pressure selling to people I know, and I don't like screwing strangers either.

Do you mean to tell me that making the big money doesn't supercede common decency? What kind of Republican are you?

Regards,
Dave

Lol!

I don't mean to slam RE agents or really anyone else. I was very young, I've learned you can make an honest living and a good one selling houses or anything else.

But it's a lot easier in the short run to screw everyone.

One of those little philosophical thoughts that creep into my mind from time to time is trying to figure out how to be absolutely honest and successfully negotiate. If you say something is your absolute last and final bottom line, and you're holding a little something in reserve, are you playing by the rules or being dishonest? If you refuse to acknowledge a weakness in your position are you being a staunch advocate or dishonest? Is it dishonest to say that you need to go talk to your sales manager when you are the sales manager?

One little play that I've had fun with is to give a number that is your bottom line, and communicate that you will not take less, and mean it - say $10,000. When the other side comes back and says, $9500 you respond, "It's now $10,100, because I gave you my bottom line, and now you're wasting my time." That at least establishes the credibility of the bottom line.

Regards,

D-Ray

Wow, you've given this some thought. Interesting because for some reason I'm been thinking about what I do, the things that become second nature after so many years.

I do most negotiating over the phone, so I just say 'let me see what I can do'.

Often, that's just hanging up, doing something else for a few minutes, and calling back and saying 'well you've been a good customer all these years blah blah blah, we'll do it.'

I'd like to go on, but gotta work if I want to get out of here at a decent time....
