It’s vital for influential Americans – and everyone else – to publicly correct those dangerous lies and others circulating in our body politic. The deliberate gap left by our national law imposes a civic obligation to practice the only peaceful alternative to criminalizing speech that leads to violence: publicly repudiating it. That responsibility falls most heavily and urgently on those who have the best chance of undermining dangerous disinformation: people who are admired by those who believe it, including (but not limited to) Republican candidates and officials, conservative Christian leaders, retired military officers, and well-known sports figures.

Most of those people have been deafeningly silent since Trump began his long campaign to steal the 2022 election, and since he was twice indicted. Among Republicans, only a small handful have spoken out, so few that they are easily dismissed by the majority and by Republican leaders, and their political careers destroyed, which discourages others from following their example. As long as this continues, bellicose, false rhetoric will become more and more acceptable in mainstream American civic discourse, and mass violence will become more and more likely.

Unfortunately, comprehensive data on the extent of extremist infiltration of the military is lacking. A recent report by the Anti-Defamation League found that the Oath Keepers had at least 373 active law enforcement employees and at least 117 active duty military service people, but those numbers both seem low given that the Oath Keepers organization has up to 38,000 members and was founded explicitly to appeal to veterans. Another estimate suggested that around 25 percent of militia members came from a military background.

The numbers are hard to argue with. Right-wing ideologies were behind a majority of the nearly 600 domestic terror attacks that occurred from 2010 through 2021, according to data shared with Military Times by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank based in Washington, D.C. During that period, right-wing extremists were charged with 353 plots or attacks that caused 147 deaths, the data show. In the same time frame, far-left extremists carried out 126 plots or attacks, killing 23 people. The rest of the political violence during those years was committed by jihadist groups and ethnonationalists, which included antisemitic and Jewish extremists and Cuban exiles, among others.

The think tank’s data supports findings from the Department of Homeland Security, which also determined that white supremacy was behind more domestic terrorist attacks and plots than any other ideology from 2010 through 2021.

Accelerationist ideology, conspiracy theories, disinformation, and far-right extremist narratives have played a key role in the prioritization of critical infrastructure as a target for the violent far-right. The intersections of these ideologies and narratives have led to complex attacks on power grids and the targeting of telecommunications systems by far-right extremists. The increased focus and attacks on critical infrastructure by far-right extremists has the potential to wreak extensive, multifaceted societal disruption and damage, impacting communications, the economy, mobility, and basic human necessities.

Attacks motivated by far-right extremism have increased in the United States over the past several years. Though the far-right has posed a threat to the homeland for decades, the scale of far-right violence has risen significantly. According to data collected by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, far-right terrorist attacks and plots have comprised more than half of all terrorist incidents in the United States nearly every year since 2011.[3] In 2019, far-right extremism accounted for nearly two-thirds of failed, foiled, and successful attacks. In the first half of 2020 alone, it was responsible for over 90 percent.[4] Since 2013, the far-right has consistently been associated with more terrorist attacks and plots than left-wing, ethnonationalist, and religiously motivated perpetrators.[5]
