Credit from a conservative pundit

Michael Gerson, as a speechwriter for Dub, could hardly be expected to do any cheer-leading for President Obama. However, in his recent column, he actually recognizes the right of Muslims to build the NY City Mosque, and compliments Obama for Obama's recognition of that right. Gerson's approach to the subject is quite reasonable. (One could cynically say that he was just supporting a fellow speech-writer, but I choose not to play the cynic today.) What would our political scene look like today if people on both sides of the fence were willing to logically address issues like this one.

Regards,

D-Ray

As nice as it would be, I'd recommend against you holding your breath on this one. Logic doesn't win political arguments, it seems. Emotions, conventional wisdom and intellectual laziness are the coin of the realm in modern day politics.

But but but - I'm an optimist. To dream the impossible dream . . .

His response was correct, but it was a double edged sword that will cut him both ways.

This entire argument is nothing but a political canard.

To wit;

1). It is not "at" Ground Zero, but a half a block away.

2). There is a difference between the average Muslim and a Radical Islamist. A big
difference. I believe GWB once tried to explain this distinction. Was no one on the
right listening? Maybe this is something they don't want to hear?

3). The President was right. They are well within their legal and Constitutional rights.

4). The President was right when he said; "I didn't say anything about the wisdom
of putting it there." They are asking for trouble in locating it so close.

5). This is religious freedom, and the right of property owners to do as they wish with
their property. They are legal American citizens, to curtail their religious and
property rights is to curtail your own.

6). If you don't want them assimilating, then what do you (realistically) propose we do?
Further villification on our part, and moves like building this Mosque on their part, is
not the way, IMHO.

7). Like it or not, we must live together, THAT cat is already out of the bag.

This is how I see it.

I wonder what exactly it is that the Wingnuts would have him do in that any overt action by him would be blatantly unconstitutional on its face, not to mention that local government favors it. Yet again, an example of the right wing discarding their "conservative principles" to take an ignorant cheap shot.
