Remember When I Joked About Pizza and Paper In Oil Cap Delivery Drones?

I guess the head of Amazon was thinking the same thing.

The drones have to be cheap, but smart and safe. Can't have them landing on the kid's trike and wrecking themselves--or a kid. It can be done, I'm sure, but can it be done cheaply enough....

I would imagine homes being equiped with a small "drone pad" with GPS coordinates.
Of course the customer would be emailed the time for delivery so as to know when to keep their head on a swivel.

They have to have robust real-time obstacle avoidance capability, regardless. But it helps that he's planning on building a fleet of hundreds of thousands eventually, I assume. That will drive unit cost down. Eventually.

Looks like a great thing for terrorists to exploit.
Someone is already working on anti-drone technology and the right of the property owner to patrol over the airspace above their land.

More complication. The drones will have to have transponders that will identify them to the homeowner's defense system and negotiate permission to land.
