I would think one would always get more back than what one paid in over ones working life assuming one works for about 40 years until age 65 and then lives till about 80.
None but the very rich would be paying in more than they would get back. I assume you are talking about Medicare and SS? If you are thinking are the services we receive over our entire life from all the taxes we paid worth it? Like paved roads? Universal education?
then yes

Ice, you may be taking his question verbatim and/or very seriously. I am sure he is referring to the Romney 47% as in "are you a contributing ($) member to the society or a drag?".

Yeah, I was. I suspect he is right that most everybody will get more SS and Medicaid back if they live a long life.
I paid a little over a million dollars in plain old income tax before I retired. My retirement fund was tax deferred so I still pay full tax on what I take out.
I don't mind paying income tax because that means you are making some money, but I think they piss way to much of it away

Pissing away too much is only part of our budget morass. How about the plethora of tax loopholes and subsidies? Of course, then campaign coffers will dry up.
But imagine, if everyone paid their fair share of taxes, balancing the budget will be a lot easier. But then the other side would say, "that is like giving them more to spend".
Easier to blame it on the 47%.

For years in Canada, for the thirty years I have been here and I bring more money into the country than I get out of it.

I am a single man with no dependents. The amount I pay in taxes as a percentage is obscene. This gives me all the more incentive to live frugally, (Well, except for my taste in cars, that is. ) and stuff as much as possible into tax deferred savings....to date, just shy of $300,000. Of course, I will pay when I start to draw from that in 10-15 years.
