I was speaking metaphorically. US taxes are spent, amongst other things, on military assets and personnel that are used to help bolster defenses for other countries around the world. If Canadians would like to start, for example, increasing their share of funding for NORAD, it would be a start. Until then, let's not forget that tax dollars in Canada can be spent on healthcare in part because the US is picking up the tab for part of that counrty's defense budget.

I'd argue we spend what we do on defense because our political system is bought and paid for by Ike's MIC. "Protecting the free world" is just the rationalization for doing so. I speak from experience on this having worked for DoD for twenty years, much of it in overseeing large contracts.
